Latte Versus Latte Macchiato

Here is a quick comparison between latte and latte macchiato.

Latte or "caffè latte" is made by pouring a shot of espresso into a cup, adding steamed milk until the cup is almost full, and then topping the drink off with milk foam.

A caffè latte has a stronger coffee flavor and more caffeine than a latte macchiato. The emphasis is on the espresso rather than the milk.

Latte macchiato

Latte macchiato has the same ingredients as caffè latte but the espresso is added to milk (i.e., it gets "marked" or "stained") rather than adding milk to espresso.

Latte macchiato has more milk foam, typically has only a half shot or less of espresso, and is often a layered, rather than a mixed, drink.

A latte macchiato will often have more calories than a latte because it has more milk. The caloric content is also affected by the addition of sweeteners and other extra ingredients. For example, a Starbucks 16 oz latte has 190 calories versus 240 calories for a caramel macchiato.
